2018 | US Congress; Syrian War Crimes Accountability Act of 2017 - S.905, 115th Congress

This is a Bill proposed by 20 U.S. senators on April 7th2017, and placed on the Senate Legislative Calendar (with amendments) on June 12th2017. The Bill proposesto require a report on, and to authorize technical assistance for, accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide in Syria, and for other purposes. The Bill is clearly aimed at urging the US government to commit to a high standard of continuous engagement with the investigations into (criminal) conduct of all parties involved in the Syrian war, to commit publicly to working to ensure accountability for any crimes, to contribute to the development of transitional justice mechanisms for Syria and to support the UN’s investigative efforts

This bill: (1) condemns the violence, use of chemical weapons and human rights violations carried out by the Syrian government, pro-government forces and all extremist groups and other combatants involved in the Syrian conflict; (2) expresses its support for the people of Syria seeking democratic change; (3) urges all parties to halt civilian attacks and sieges, to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid; (4) calls on the President to support efforts to ensure accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide committed during the conflict in Syria.

(Notwithstanding a blogsite asserting that this Bill has already passed in the Senate), the Bill tracker of the official site https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/905 shows the Bill’s status as ‘Introduced’ and not yet Passed the Senate’ (as of  27 Nov 2018).
