2019 | Pentagon; Statement Acknowledging Civilian Casualties in Drone Strike Conducted in Somalia

On April 5, 2019 the Pentagon issued a statement acknowledging that a United States (US) drone strike conducted in Somalia on April 1, 2018 killed two civilians. Though internally known, these casualties were not reported properly to headquarter level.

While underscoring that transparency and accountability are vital to military operations and that the US is committed to “learning from this regrettable incident to prevent future occurrences” the Statement leaves the right to reparations for the victims and their families unaddressed.
