Reparations Database
This Press Release by the Humanitarian Law Centre announces the Serbian Supreme Court of Appeal’s new Guidelines for victims seeking reparations for war crimes within the criminal proceedings against the perpetrators who caused their harm. To date, victims have been informed that they must pursue their claims in separate proceedings before a civil court. This has precluded most victims from ever receiving reparations. The Humanitarian Law Center views the new ‘Guidelines’ as a step forward in improving the situation of victims in Serbia, and calls on the Office of the War Crimes Prosecutor to take a more active part in gathering the evidence needed for the adjudication of compensation claims, and for the courts to adjudicate compensation claims in the course of criminal proceedings whenever possible.
