2012 | The Justice, Law and Order Sector, Statement, Reparations in Uganda: Launching the Discussion

This statement is a short report on a conference on reparations organised by the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) in collaboration with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and UN Women: Thematic Conference on the Right to Remedy and Reparations of the Conflict in Norther Uganda. The Conference launched the reports “The Dust has not yet settled” and “Reparations, Development and Gender”.

Discussions put an emphasis on the need for symbolic reparations, rehabilitation of victims, assistance with livelihoods and economic empowerment of victims. It also paid attention to the gender aspects of reparations. The importance of a consultative and participatory policy development and implementation process was underlined. The Transitional Justice Working Group pledged to take up the issue of reparations as part of its task to develop a national policy on transitional justice.
