Latest Developments in the case against Surinamese President Desi Bouterse

The Nuhanovic Foundation is supporting families of the victims of the 'December Murders' committed in 1982 in Suriname in bringing a case before the Organization of American States. Among those accused of the murders is Suriname’s current president, Desi Bouterse. Surinamese lawyer and PhD candidate Gaetano Best is representing the families. Efforts to prosecute the accused in Suriname have stalled: an amnesty law introduced in 2012 (two years after Bouterse became president) allowed Suriname’s military court to suspend proceedings pending confirmation of the validity of the new law by the country’s Constitutional Court. However the Constitutional Court of Suriname has not yet been established. Via this link you can read today’s interview with the victims’ lawyer, published by the Dutch language newspaper NRC Handelsblad.
