1981 | The African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights
The African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights was ratified by Somalia on 31 July 1985, by Sudan on 18 Feb. 1986 and by Uganda on 10 May 1986. As of May 2015 South Sudan has not signed the African Charter.
Art 13 provides for the right of every citizen ‘to participate freely in the government of his country’. Art 18 prohibits every type of discrimination against women. The Charter contains no provision for a right to an effective remedy (contrast Art 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights).
