The African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights was ratified by Somailia on 31 July 1985. Art 13 provides for the right of every citizen ‘to participate freely in the government of his country’. Art 18 prohibits every type of discrimination against women. The Charter contains no provision for a right to an effective remedy (contrast Art 13 of the European Convention on Human Rights).
