Joint Communiqué Somalia-UN on the Prevention of Sexual Violence

Following a visit by the UN S-G’s Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict in May 2013, the Somali President and Foreign Minister signed this Communiqué pledging commitment to undertake nine concrete measures aimed at eradicating sexual violence: they include introducing training and strict codes of conduct in the police and military forces, ensuring investigation, trial and punishment of perpetrators, implementing protective measures for victims, witnesses and journalists who report crimes of sexual violence and legislative reform. Meanwhile, reports published during 2014 document the enormous challenges faced by the government in achieving these goals.
